Sustainability Concept History

The now-famous definition of sustainability is:

‘Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’ Our Common Future 1987.

 

The development of the concept of sustainability is characterised by certain environmental milestones as follows:

1962 – 1st publication of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring

1972 – The Limits to Growth report

1972 – Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment (UN)

1979 – Geneva Convention on Air Pollution (UN)

1980 – World Conservation Strategy (IUCN)

1983 – World Commission on Environment and Development (UN)

1987 – Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (UN)

1987 – Our Common Future   (Brundtland Commission on behalf of the UN)

1992 – Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) – Agenda 21 (UN)

1997 – Pathways to Sustainability: Local Initiatives for Cities and Towns (UN), Newcastle, NSW

1997 – Kyoto Convention on Climate Change (UN) Kyoto Protocol

2001 – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (UN)

2002 – World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg)

2005 – World Summit on Social Development – Sustainable development has three goals [ 14 to 16 September at United Nations Headquarters in New York].

Sustainability brings to the fore the natural ecological processes of the Earth that are the essential capital for continuing life. It is now an international concept that is being addressed at local and international levels  (TAFE NSW 2011, World Energy Foundation 2021).

In 2015, The U.N. General Assembly published their Sustainable Development Goals. The goals are set to be achieved by the year 2030. Several of the 17 goals, like “Goal #6: Clean Water and Sanitation” and “Goal #7: Affordable and Clean Energy” focus on environmental sustainability issues.
