Heritage Style Restoration in Haberfield 2

Federation Style construction of dwellings in Australia is circa 1900. Haberfield NSW Australia is labelled the Federation Style suburb. In 1916, Mr Richard Stanton, a developer of Haberfield and Roseberry, imported an entire timber bungalow from Pasadena Hills, Los Angeles, USA and assembled it in the Sydney suburb of Roseberry.
However, the subject house is a solid double brick Californian Bungalow built circa 1920 in Haberfield the so-called Federation Style suburb.

In the first instance, 100 years ago,  lounge room construction expenses were not considered. North American Oregon was used in the whole room – skirtings, architraves, wall panel framing up to the plate rail, small corbels, fretwork, love seats, built-in sideboard, cornice, ceiling panel framing doors [but excluding the mantle being Australian silky oak and the floor being kauri]. All this joinery was originally varnished. The kauri floor had a rug in the middle with a painted black japan band around the perimeter.

This house remained in the same family for many decades. At some time in history, someone painted all the above in white. Time doesn’t stand still, tastes change, in the late 1990s, the current owner had all the paint removed and stained/lacquered, etc. The North American Oregon was stripped by hand augmented by heat. The Australian silky oak mantle was removed, taken to an expert and stripped by dipping in the caustic liquid bath solution. The kauri floor had termite activity ruined boards replaced,  sanded and polyurethaned by experts. Here it is:
