Balustrade Restoration by Custom Home Builder
We have been Custom Home Building on a 100-year-old Federation Home in Strathfield NSW Australia since 1998! Are you thinking why has it taken so long? Well, it’s a big family home on a rambling parcel of land and a lot of work of renovation, restoration and extension have been required.
Only recently a building and pest inspector discovered rotting wood on a balcony balustrade and reported it to the owner.
Your friendly, efficient, productive and industrious Custom Home Builder (yours truly ) was commissioned to restore the balustrade.

The existing pickets on this balcony and elsewhere on the house are fantastical flowers, you will note an existing one on the right of the photo.
Custom Home Builder obtained:
some old clear Oregon ( in stock but originally of USA origin ) for the bottom rail and machined the sloping rebate with an electric skill saw,
some new western red cedar (of USA origin) for the vertical balusters,
some new western red cedar (of USA origin) for the vertical pickets and with an electric jigsaw cut out the fantastical flowers.
Many years ago, circa the year 2000, a cardboard stencil of the fantastical flower was made and is still utilised on this property.
All cut end-grain was sealed before nailing.
The sealing of end grain is an effort to prolong the life of the timber element. Many years ago in Australia, the sealing of timber was done with red lead primer but it was banned due to its toxicity.

Engagement for the certification work is on a contract basis.

However, this service can only be conducted if the insurer is on-side, and currently, they are not and as a result, we do not conduct it.
