Consumer Building Guide NSW – Progress Inspections

For large projects such as building a new home, you may consider getting a progress inspection carried out by an independent building consultant, building inspector or architect * before each payment is made. If you do, it will be the consultant’s job to make sure all the work set out in the contract has been done and meets the appropriate standards. However, defective work may have been covered up with paint or internal wall cladding and may not be identified. Ideally, the consultant should inspect the work at times when problems can be identified. Guidelines, as to the cost for each inspection, are between $250.00 and $500.00.

A building surveyor is a different type of inspector which are working either for a Council or privately. A building surveyor is licensed to conduct ‘critical  stage inspections’. This type authorizes the building work before it starts under a signed contract. photo by author.
