Ozone Depletion
The ozone layer protects us from extremely harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Yet the natural balance of ozone (O3) has become disrupted by manufactured chemical compounds called CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) which earthlings have used in foams, aerosols, air-conditioning and refrigeration.
Halon used in fire extinguishers and other chemical solvents also has the same effect, that is, of breaking up the molecules, thinning out the protective layer in the atmosphere and even making a hole above the north and south poles. This problem has led to international agreements to use less damaging substitutes like hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). The problem is getting worse before it can get better because it takes more than a decade for the gas to filter from the Earth’s surface to the upper atmosphere. [image source google]
