Smog
Smog and haze have become an unfortunate part of many cities wherein many parts of the world never see a blue sky or the stars at night! Sydney now sees but a fraction of the stars visible 100 years ago. Smog occurs when nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons (petrol fumes, turpentine, solvents) combine with sunlight, concentrating ozone near ground level.

Ozone is very dangerous to humans (especially asthma sufferers), plants, and animals. These chemicals in the air spread widely and are proven to damage agricultural crops too. You may have heard of the extreme air problems in southeast Asia in mid-1997 with illness and deaths attributed to smog and smoke from burning forests. Industry and cars are the main sources of sulphur and nitrogen oxides created by the high-temperature burning of some fuels. This pollutes the air and can combine with water molecules to precipitate as ‘acid rain’ killing off trees and plants as well as biologically deadening water supplies that animals, including humans, require. Acidification also causes a lot of immediate economic damage, rusting away galvanised metals in a very short time and killing whole forests in Europe and North America. [images source google]
