Water-efficient Landscaping
Whilst the Sydney average for outdoor water use is 25% of the total, for suburban and some country areas the percentage can go as high as 50%. In summer, more than half of our water use goes into the garden, much of which is wasted. Green lawns in summer are often especially wasteful. Less frequent watering makes the lawn more drought resistant and an occasional thorough watering from rainfall, hose or sprinkler is better than daily sprinkles. Watering in the cooler part of the day is always best and washing your car over the lawn not only waters the lawn but uses shampoo (often with phosphorus) as a fertiliser. We don’t want to pollute our waterways with phosphorus as it is a major contributor to algal blooms. [image source google]
