Watering Your Garden

garden hoseWatering systems

Garden watering systems are increasingly popular and often more water efficient than hand-held hoses or poorly placed sprinklers. Ordinary sprinklers may spread 1000 litres of water per hour very inefficiently in all directions, whilst a drip watering system may deliver 100 litres per hour direct to your selected plants. Whichever system is used, watering in the cool part of the day is essential.

Watering by hand

This usually needs to be reduced from frequent light sprinkling to fewer and heavier watering. Remember that tree roots extend out to the edge of the ‘drip line’ which is the edge of the tree canopy, so it’s better to water there than at the base of the tree.

Hose sprinklers

These are effective as long as they are aimed correctly and don’t waste water on fences or driveways. You have to remember to turn them on and off and move them when necessary.

Travelling sprinklers

These are usually on wheels and are powered by the water pressure to follow a short and flat route, suitable for regular lawns. Another model has a guide wheel to follow the hose along a more winding route.

Drip watering systems

These are the most water-efficient as they deliver two, four or eight litres of water per hour to exactly where you want it. You can attach any number of watering heads to the line.

Micro sprays

These connect to the same kind of line but give above-ground watering with a light spray.

Pop-up sprinklers

These are set flush with a lawn and pop up under pressure to start watering.

Automatic watering systems

Collect rainwater in buckets

Such systems with timers are convenient but very wasteful if they turn on even when it’s raining. It’s now possible to buy an override device that prevents this from happening. [image source google]
