Ecologically sustainable development is arguably the central challenge of our time. We need to continue to develop and build to maintain our way of life. But we need to do this more efficiently and effectively to also maintain the ecological processes on which life depends. We need to embrace the principles and details of ESD now, to give our children and their children the opportunity of meeting their needs in the future-sustainably.
More than anything, ecologically sustainable development requires a change in the way we think and act with respect to the natural world around us-from broad development options for land areas through to the actions on a building site. This means recognising that we are a vital part of the world’s ecological systems and have a crucial role in reversing present environmental degradation.
Across the world, ESD is being accepted as an essential concept for human survival. In some countries, the term used is ‘sustainable’ design or construction (eg USA); elsewhere, ‘ecological’ is used to show the connection to nature. Sometimes, in the Australian situation, ESD is used to mean ecologically sustainable ‘design’, which is part of ecologically sustainable development. Environmental building principles are all about how to apply ESD to design and construction.
Industry too is starting to embrace sustainability, not just in responding to Authority requirements, but in ‘the triple bottom line reporting. This means looking past just immediate financial profits to the bigger issues and the longer term. Balancing prosperity (economics) with people (society) and the planet (environment).
