Ecologically sustainable development is arguably the central challenge of our time. We need to continue to develop and build to maintain our way of life. Across the world, ESD is being accepted as an essential concept for human survival. In some countries, the term used is ‘sustainable’ design or construction (eg USA); elsewhere, ‘ecological’ is used to show the connection to nature. Sometimes, in the Australian situation, ESD is used to mean ecologically sustainable ‘design’, which is part of ecologically sustainable development. Environmental building principles are all about how to apply ESD to design and construction.
Industry too is starting to embrace sustainability, not just in responding to Authority requirements, but in ‘the triple bottom line reporting. This means looking past just immediate financial profits to the bigger issues and the longer term. Balancing prosperity (economics) with people (society) and the planet (environment).
