Sometimes, in the Australian situation, ESD is used to mean ecologically sustainable ‘design’, which is part of ecologically sustainable development. Environmental building principles are all about how to apply ESD to design and construction.

This means looking past just immediate financial profits to the bigger issues and the longer term. Balancing prosperity (economics) with people (society) and the planet (environment).
