Once they are established, these plants need less work and water than many of the traditional garden choices. Native plants are usually hardy and drought resistant and can give a most attractive appearance. Species can be selected to attract birds, for colour, aroma, shade, and warm or cold climates and there are lots of people and books with good advice.
If you select species that grow naturally in your region, you will probably have the least trouble establishing and maintaining them, plus the satisfaction of contributing towards local biodiversity. That’s the reason both Councils and the Landcare movement tend to plant local native species. If you provide mulch around the base-straw, leaves, or grass clippings-then this helps hold in water as well, retaining up to 70% more water. Furthermore, the mulch slowly breaks down to become a natural fertiliser-recycling nutrient (and avoiding the need for chemical fertilisers). Save money.
