The Greenhouse Effect

In a natural and desirable process: the sun produces light and radiation (warmth) to the Earth, at night some of this warmth re-radiates back from the Earth out into the universe, some gases trap the infra-red radiation thereby creating ‘greenhouse’ conditions that keep a balance between warmth and coolness that sustain life.  

Unfortunately, in the last few hundred years, earthlings have burnt fossil fuels (gas, coal, oil) created over millions of years at an ever-increasing rate. As these organic fuels burn, they give off large quantities of ‘greenhouse gases’ especially carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄). These gases are poisonous to humans. They also cause an enhanced greenhouse effect as the concentration of these gases in the atmosphere increases, causing temperatures in the world to rise. The natural balance that has taken millions of years to develop is now being measurably changed, due to human activity. If we burn just one kilogram of petrol or oil, for example, we liberate 3.2 kg of CO₂! [image source google]
