Fix a Blocked Sewer 2 of 2

You might recall the blog entitled ‘Fix a Blocked Sewer’. Guess what! Circa mid-January 2023, the bathroom waste was gurgling again. Oh me oh my, to say the least.

The plumber came along with his jet blaster inserted,  but it got stuck and the three of us could not pull it out of the terracotta sewer line. More drama. The sewer line is probably seventy years old. The plumber got his sewer camera out and inserted it finding the sewer line was mostly clear except for the spot where his jet blaster nozzle was stuck noticing a drop in the terracotta sewer line.

Solution – dig up a trench to expose the old terracotta sewer line and the twenty-year-old connection of an inspection opening. In early February 2023, the excavation was started by hand together with my plumber son and not by machine because the excavator that I met in 1984  did not show up plus the are a number of underground services in that vicinity. There we have it in the photograph thanks to some hard yakka by my son and me. The hole is four metres long by one metre deep. We found shale! So much rock. Meanwhile, the sewer line would bank up so my plumber son had to rod it clear.

At the top of the photograph is the seventy old terracotta gully riser just before the main sewer line. At that point, we had to dig another 400 mm down to replace it with plastic encased in concrete.  The first blue rag and brick you see is where the sewer line dropped for an unknown reason. The second blue rag and brick you see is where the jet blaster nozzle was stuck in a gap between two pipes. My son the plumber ripped all the terracotta out replacing it with the modern plastic sewer pipe.
