Green Bathrooms

Healthier and  Greener

Carter Oosterhouse teams up with Lowe’s and Green Works to revamp a family’s second bathroom to make it healthier and more eco-friendly.

#1: Get surface smart. Bathroom surfaces can be hotspots for mould, mildew and dirt. Install non-porous, recycled countertops for an eco-friendly way to minimize mould. Carter is also adding flooring that’s made with renewable materials that is certified as allergy-friendly. Green It Yourself Project [image via google]

#2: Become a fan of clean air. A foggy mirror can mean more than just a hot, steamy shower. It can be a sign that there is not enough ventilation in your bathroom. High humidity and poor ventilation can lead to mould, mildew and rot. Carter replaces the old exhaust fan with an ENERGY STAR Qualified model. Green It Yourself Project

#3: Cutwater consumption. An older toilet can use up to 3.5 gallons of water per flush. A leaky faucet can lose 3 gallons and a shower can use 20-40 gallons per shower. Reducing water consumption with eco-friendly showerheads and toilets can save water and up to 0 per year. A high-efficiency toilet will use only about 1/3 as much water as an older toilet. Green It Yourself Project

#4: Nature your nurture. Many bath care items contain chemicals like phthalates and parabens. Stock your bathroom with organic towels and a natural shower curtain. Bring in phthalate-free toys for safer playtime for babies and children. To find the products used in these projects, visit: www.Lowes.com
