Heritage Style Restoration in Haberfield 3

Federation Style construction of dwellings in Australia is circa 1900. Haberfield NSW Australia is labelled the Federation Style suburb. In 1916, Mr Richard Stanton, a developer of Haberfield and Roseberry, imported an entire timber bungalow from Pasadena Hills, Los Angeles, USA and assembled it in the Sydney suburb of Roseberry.
However, the subject house is a solid double brick Californian Bungalow built in the year circa 1920 in Haberfield the so-called Federation Style suburb.

Some 20 years ago, the lounge room had a huge carpet rug square with the 500 mm perimeter edge floorboards painted over with black japan and other rooms had old linoleum.  Removing the lounge room carpet exposed bare 100 mm wide kauri floorboards [other than a bit of black japan] with a little bit of current termite or white ant activity on three boards. Peeling off the linoleum exposed more kauri but also 100mm wide Crow’s ash floorboards [strange find at the time].

Crow’s ash is a  large hardwood of occasional occurrence found in coastal rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland Australia that has distinct heartwood of golden yellow. Kauri is a large softwood found in Queensland Australia with the heartwood of pale cream to pale brown.

The termite-affected kauri was replaced with recycled kauri boards as seen in Photo 1.

The Crow’s ash floorboards were left in the hallway and bedrooms as is. Some Crow’s ash floorboards in the kitchen were rearranged/reclaimed/recycled but turned out to not be enough. Recycled Crow’s ash floorboards cannot be found but a limited supply of newly felled 60 mm wide floorboards was available at a $100AUD / sqm, purchased and installed as seen in Photo 2.

Polishing the floorboards exposed a little bit of old insect borer activity but ok, negligible and left as seen in Photo 1. The latter led to my assumption all the floorboards were originally lovely kauri. At some point in time due to borer activity or perhaps termite activity, many of the rooms had the floorboards replaced with the lovely Crow’s ash floorboards.
