On Friday 9/3/12 we received delivery of the wood-turned posts. Immediately we started sanding, and oiling and carried on with oil paint priming and application of the modern non-toxic anti-rot / borer treatment. Black creosote was used years ago and seems very effective. Creosote is one of the oldest forms of timber preservative. It is derived from coal or wood, contains more than 300 chemicals and is characterised by its dark, tar-coloured appearance and distinctive smell. It is only used outdoors as it can harm human health if used indoors. As a result, it cannot be used for domestic applications.
The posts were allowed to dry off in the ample underfloor space of the particular house. Here is the photo by the carpenter:
