Friends, in 2009 my chosen blog designer provided a game plan and a decent upfront fee. After expending AUD$, years go by so quickly, and a new blog designer disagrees thus I spent more AUD $ upfront in 2017.

Strawbale house construction is shown in this movie trailer for the “Building With Awareness” DVD video. Currently, a strawbale home uses tightly compressed straw bales [stacking technique] covered in a 35-50mm lime-based render. This method of building results in a carbon-positive wall system that is super-insulated (approx. R-8), fire-resistant and beautiful. Straw bales are used for infill only and not structural. One downside is they can be susceptible to structural movement, leading to cracks in the plaster and even the collapse of a load-bearing wall, so the initial building technique must be perfect. However, apparently, it is still not mainstream in Australia.
Strawbale walls, thermal mass walls, earth plaster techniques, and passive solar design are all explained in this how-to DVD on building with natural materials. Thermal mass walls consist of 100 mm of concrete facing the interior, 50 mm of concrete on the exterior and 50 mm of Styrofoam extruded polystyrene board insulation sandwiched in between. Earthen plaster (adobe plaster, or dagga) is a blend of clay, fine aggregate, and fibre. Other common additives include pigments, lime, casein, prickly pear cactus juice (Opuntia), manure, and linseed oil.
