Water Harvesting

Our household water supply is potentially from various sources, i.e. it may be piped (reticulated) from storage dams, obtained from boreholes tapping into underground water, or collected off rooftops and held in rainwater tanks. Water quality varies. Public water supplies are treated to eliminate contaminants, whilst bore water may need filters to make it suitable even for stock. Rainwater should be the purest, but dust and air-borne contaminants from industrial processes (such as acid rain) can affect water quality.

For these reasons, some housing subdivisions such as Rouse Hill (western Sydney) are building a dual-pipe water supply-first quality water to the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom, with recycled (second grade) water to flush toilets and for the garden.

Last decade, the NSW government has supported the introduction of rainwater tanks for domestic and garden use. Even in cities where the water quality is not good because of air pollution, water tanks are useful for gardens. Irrespective, ‘first flush’ devices can be easily made, diverting the first five minutes of (polluted) roof water away from the storage tank. [image source google]
