Woodworking Skills 3

Well recently, I made what I call a timber chandelier! A couple of years ago I was in a furniture store here in Greater Sydney and saw a pendant light with a timber frame for some AUD $300.00 and thought why cannot I make a light out of timber in my back veranda room-turned dining room?

So looking in my garage I found bits and bobs of material I could use. I had in stock, 3 metre-long lengths of Merbau timber in 18 mm by 42 mm and 38 mm by 42 mm which fell off the back of a truck. Merbau is a hardwood from South East Asia, Papua New Guinea, the Pacific islands, and northern Queensland. Also, I had in stock recycled 2 no. ‘U’ shackle bolts.

I bought 2 no. zinc-plated 50 mm hitching ring plates at our local big hardware store. With a local electrical supplier, I spent some  AUD $350.00 on led strips white lighting, cable, 2 no. transformers, and a two gang metal-covered light switch [ which I thought was expensive].

I/we bolted the timber together and then lacquered it. The next step was to fix the duct housing the led strips. Eventually, my electrician friend came over, and after some drama passed the electrical wires through the existing roof space and brick wall cavity connected it up and let there be eco-friendly and energy-efficient light! The roof space is the thickness of a rafter and batten. Ohh I still have to work out the finishing touches like clip the black cable to the vertical and make some sort of timber shroud to camouflage the red/white wires. It is 3 metres long, and it has a light switch for each led strip bank, at dinner parties, there is plenty of light and I love it.
